Bonfire of Justice

I’ve been looking through the QUANGO hit list. I have done a rough sieve of (family) justice related appearances on it. Items of particular note in bold.

To be abolished:

  • Administrative Justice and Tribunal Council
  • Courts Boards (19 bodies)
  • Crown Court Rule Committee
  • General Social Care Council
  • Legal Services Commission
  • Legal Services Ombudsman
  • Maqistrates’ Court Rule Committee
To be merged:
  • Advisory Committees on Justices of the Peace, (101 bodies – to be reduced to 49)
  • Crown Prosecution Service, Single Prosecution Service

Under review:

  • Chief Coroner of England and Wales
  • Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission
  • Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service
  • Civil Justice Council
  • Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority
  • Equality and Human Rights Commission
  • Family Justice Council
  • Law Commission of England and Wales
  • The Office of the Children’s Commissioner
  • UK Supreme Court
To stay:
  • Criminal Cases Review Commission
  • Criminal Procedure Rule Committee
  • Family Procedure Rule Committee
  • Judicial Appointments Commission
  • Judicial Appointments and Conduct Ombudsman
  • Legal Services Board
  • Office of Judicial Complaints
  • Office for Legal Complaints

I am wondering what exactly will be left of the family justice system to review by the time that David Norgrove reports. However, whilst family justice is apparently about to be abolished, readers will be pleased to note that the country will be able to keep hold of the really important things like the British Wool Marketing Board, the Horserace Betting Levy Appeal Tribunal, and the Plant Varieties and Seeds Tribunal. Oh, and the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art. Obviously more important than the Supreme Court or legal aid.

.

I’m going off to merge with a glass of red wine and abolish a big bar of chocolate. And to draw up a list of alternative jobs.
