Top 10 Law Blogs

Jacqui G has included me in her top ten law blogs (I will not call them blawgs – ick). Thanks Jacqui. So I guess I’d better join in and pass the buck to someone else…It’s been quite good fun finding some of these.

Here then is my top ten (in no particular order). Some are family related, others more generally legal. And some are ‘legal’ only by virtue of the fact that their author is a lawyer…:

bloody relations – a blog from another family barrister who I pass in assorted county courts from time to time…lots of interesting and funny information on her blog about family law and news.

Clarendon Family Law Team blog – much as it irks me to publicise another set of barrister’s chambers I say ‘good on ’em’ for recognising the ‘POWER OF THE BLOG’ (star wars voice) as a marketing tool. Hadn’t seen this blog until trawling for my top ten today but its actually a really good resource which I will not hesitate to call upon in future. Thanks v much Clarendon.

Family Lore – topical, funny and useful family oriented stuff from John Bolch.

Divorce Solicitor – because lawyers are human beans too…

Ruthie’s Law – found this one today. Made me laugh.

Liadnan – a random assortment of mostly not-legal stuff from a rather charismatic sounding lawyer

GeekLawyer – good god. a lawyer who swears. I think this bloody top ten thing might be his bright idea…

Head of Legal – a legal blog with its beady eye firmly on the newspapers

FeministLawProfs – rather interesting blog, and a little different from the others in my list (but I gotta say – in answer to the post which considers the possibility that the phrase ‘what’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander’ might be gendered – they’re all birds innit (excuse pun)? Or possibly the more appropriate response would be that in its application it is not gender specific even though (plainly) geese do come in different sexes. It is a phrase whose essential meaning is rooted in the idea of SAMENESS not DIFFERENCE…)

BLAAAAAAAAWGS

Interesting entry on the nearly legal blog from another legal blogger (please don’t say blawger – its too awful a title to bear) about (amongst other things) the surprising range of interest a legal blog can generate.

and apparently in someone’s world I’m no 28 of the top family law blogs. that’s a rather nice surprise but its making me feel all competitive….I WANT 27th place!

However, I’m afraid that I’m not going to be pushing myself up the rankings this week since I’m in the middle of a trial in a care case (yes, checking on the blog is what I do to unwind in between wolfing down dinner and going back to preparing my cross exam for tomorrow) and I can’t give much thought to content at the mo…Getting 27th place will have to wait until I’ve got a plan for my closing speech…

get a life – get a blog

Whilst I welcome comment on this blog – both of the kind that showers me with praise and the kind that disagrees with me (of which the former is something of a rarity), I do sometimes wonder why people who hold such strong views and who comment prolifically on this blog don’t simply go out and put their views out there in a more coherent way than via snippety comments on Pink Tape.

Comments are great, they make a blog interesting, BUT I’m beginning to think that I’ve reached a point where some commenters are devoting so much energy to setting forth their views about every blog entry that I can’t hear myself think. I didn’t intend this blog to become a forum for lawyer-bashing to the point where my voice is drowned out.

Making comments on other people’s blog is a safe way of setting out your views without having to worry too much (and maybe a little lazy) – blogging is putting yourself up there on a platform and saying ‘So what do you all think?’. I’ve done that and I want to hear what people have to say but frankly I don’t like being shouted at all the time! And the same posts from the same people about the same topics day in day out is dull reading for anyone, whatever your views.

And now I notice that this post has been referenced from Wikipedia as a source of discussion about Bruce Hyman the penny is starting to drop. I don’t particularly want my blog to be a reference point for views that I don’t hold or that Wikipedia won’t post. Go do it in your own back yard.

So guys – it is with some regret that I’ve decided from now on to moderate all comments. I won’t remove the existing comments and I won’t block any particular individuals, but enough is enough. I’m sorry to spoil your fun, but I think its time to reclaim ownership of my blog and my voice – you are free to exercise your right to free speech, but this is not your platform and I won’t let you distort what I want to say through this blog: start your own blog – you seem to have more than enough time and plenty of material. I will read them with interest.
